The Real Truth on 4G Wireless Technology

3G. 4G. Here a G, there a G, everywhere a G — and we’re not talking about gangsters, we’re talking about cell phones! Or rather, the technology that’s powering the cell phone that you rely on a lot more than you’re probably willing to admit. If you’re thinking about upgrading to a 4G phone, one of the first things that you might wonder is whether or not 4G wireless technology is worth spending the extra money. Considering that the technology is still new, it’s safe to say that in this case, new is definitely going to be a lot more expensive than staying put with your 3G phone.

See, the truth of the matter is that 4G is great — if you’re in an area with 4G access. Even then, network congestion can still slow down your service — just like it can on 3G. When 3G first came out, there was a lot of hype there too. No matter what type of “G” service you choose, the network conditions are going to control your speed. In addition, if you’re not right up on a tower, you won’t get that coveted 4G speed that you adore — you’ll have to settle with a slower speed. EDGE is still a good alternative, even though it’s not as blazing fast.

In addition, even if you’re in a 4G area, you still have to deal with the limitations of your phone. If you don’t get a mobile phone with a screaming processor, that 4G speed will still not help you load pages faster. Thankfully, many of the 4G phones are coming with battle ready processors that can help you stay on the move with ease.

Thinking about a 4G phone still? You’re in good company. If you’re on Sprint, there’s always the Evo 4G, which is a great phone. T-Mobile has the myTouch 4G, and AT&T has too many phones to count, including the new LG Thrill 4G and Motorola Atrix 4G. Considering that 4G is now the cutting edge, it goes without saying that phone carriers are going to be scrambling to add even more 4G phone sot their line up.

So where does that really leave you? Well, if you’re thinking about getting a 4G phone and you’re due for a new phone, this can be a good thing. But if you aren’t due for a phone upgrade and you don’t really get too mobile, you might want to wait until that special free phone period to see what your options are going to be.

Turn Your BlackBerry Into a Mini-Casino With These Apps!

Got a blackberry? In love with it? Don’t worry: you’re definitely in good company. You don’t have to look far to still see people rocking their crackberries, but that doesn’t mean that the BlackBerry is all work and no play. Now that it’s gone mainstream and out of the typical corporate environment, the BlackBerry actually has a lot of neat games and apps.

Of course, if you’re a gambling buff, you might feel that there’s nothing that’s going to replace your online craps experience — or whatever game is more up your alley. If you really want to bring some of the casino fun to your BlackBerry, you’re in luck: there are quite a few apps for the BlackBerry to do just that. Here’s a short list.

Hard Rock Casino Collection

It doesn’t get more classic than the Hard Rock Casino, and the price is very cheap — only a few bucks and you’ll have an addictive casino collection game that you can play for hours. It sure beats playing BrickBreaker at the airport!

Midnight Casino

This game is created by Gameloft Inc., and has gained a lot of notoriety as being one of the best casino games around — if you’re not looking to real win money, of course. Active development is pretty obvious, and it definitely stands to reason that you will be able to get a lot hours of gameplay from the one purchase.

Mini Casino

Now, you only get 5 games with Mini Casino: baccarat, blackjack, roulette, and slots. However, 5 games is more than enough. When you combine the 5 games with the beautiful graphics, you have a winning combination that will make you thank your lucky stars that you have a BlackBerry. OK, maybe it won’t be that over the top — but hey, who doesn’t love a good casino game?

No Limit Casino Multi Pack

Poker fan? You will love playing the No Limit Casino multi Pack. Aside from pure No Limit Texas Hold’Em action, you will also be able to enjoy some good blackjack play too. Just because you’re not playing for real money doesn’t mean anything — the action is still pretty fierce, so watch out!

Overall, it’s clear to see that you’re still going to be able to get your gambling fix on the BlackBerry. The only question that remains is what games you’re actually going to play!

Samsung Nexus S

After the huge success of the Nexus One smart phone, Google teamed up its powerful Android operating system with the Samsung hardware to introduce to the world the best smart phone, which is now known as the “Nexus S.”

Comes with an optimal pricing tag, this GSM smart phone has a great list of features and is definitely a great buy. Raking in rave reviews, the first thing you will notice about the Nexus S is the display screen. First look at the screen, you will instantly fall in love with the extremely intuitive and rich colors the device boosts of. The fact that it uses Super AMOLED display technology is an added bonus; this is what consumers crave.

Aside from the brilliant 4 inch AMOLED contour display, Samsung’s Nexus S has Android Gingerbread OS. For the unfamiliar souls, this is the latest Android Gingerbread version available (although the “Honey Comb” Android OS are in the works) as of now. The Gingerbread android operating system does a lot more than Android 2.1v, or the Froyo (Android 2.2) operating system.

Although the phone does share the same slate form factor as that of the Nexus One device, but the design is complete different. It may not be innovative for some, but it blissfully provides what the consumers urges for; device that is not bulkier and finely fits in your hand. After all, that is what matters at the end.

The Nexus S smart phone is charged up with ARM Cortex A8 1Ghz processor and has support for installing the third party Java application. Dual SIM? Oh yes! The phone is also said to include the triple SIM facility — and this is awesome from a consumer point of view, you know.

With distinctive voice search capability and the lively experience of the Android OS, the phone also has a great responsiveness and is snappy enough to navigate through menus; the credit equally goes to the contour display screen and the Android Gingerbread. Also, despite the normal usage, it turns out that the battery life of Nexus S is way better than most of the smart phones.

Nexus S supports all the standard multimedia format, from MP3 audio to MP4 video files that are able to run flawlessly on the phone’s screen. Plus we have internet browsing, WLAN, Bluetooth and microUSB support.

The Nexus S smart phone employs a 5 Megapixel camera, with auto-focus of course. The screen tones the colors while taking pictures, while the flash illuminates the shots. Overall the phone does a great job in capturing images of good resolution. Not to forger, we have the HD video recording which works at 28 frames per second and videos are recorded at 720 x 480 resolution. Shoot your videos in 720p and enjoy the crystal clear output.

With the victory of the Nexus S smart phone in the mobile sector; this device has been able to establish itself distinctly in this crammed industry. You will be mesmerized with the brilliant Super AMOLED display screen and the operating system that graces the phone down the road. Worth the buy? Definitely!

Tips:

OK, let’s be honest: you’re going to have another phone on hand. That’s OK, but you might want to sell it before you get your hands on a new Nexus S. For example, you might need to sell iPhone 3G  before you can get the money you need for the Nexus S. That’s OK. You’ll find that Gazelle gives pretty good value for what you sell to them, which means you won’t feel cheated.

For those that don’t need to sell anything before they reach for the Nexus, you can always buy new 4G phones. We mention T-Mobile at the top Android carrier of choice because of the generous data plans, excellent support team and plenty of bonuses for newcomers and veterans alike.

OK, the last group is special: you want to own an Android and an iPhone 4? No problem. Make sure that you get the best iPhone accessories. Not only will you get the best selection, you’ll also get the prices you deserve as well — what more could you want?

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini

One of the popular phone in the Sony Xperia series is the XPERIA X10 Mini Pro. This, as the name implies, is the scaled down version of the Sony’s Xperia X10 smart phone. In contrast with what the other mobile industry hulks have come up with, this sweet little smart phone has already been acclaimed as the tiniest Android phone. It is definitely generating a lot of buzz since the launch.

The US version of the phone has HSDPA (2100, 850 and HSDPA 900) — and, sadly, doesn’t sport the 3G functionality. However, the X10 Mini PRO global GSM phone has a lot in common with the American version of the XPERIA X10 Mini Pro (except the 3G network support). So here’s a quick look at what’s in store for the consumers.

From the outside you will notice there is a soft-touch coating on the back of the Xperia X10 Mini Pro and the curvy outline design makes it easier for the phone to fit in your hands. Tacked onto the device is the Google’s very own Android operating system. The device runs on the Android 1.6 platform and features a Timescape app with QWERTY keyboard. The Timescape app lets you connect with your friends from the social networking websites. So, if you are a social networking buff, then you will find this app to be very addictive because you can flip through the timeline, update your status and comment on your friends status.

Talking about the screen, the XPERIA X10 Mini Pro smart phone device works on the “Thin Film” display technology and sports a 2.55 TFT touchscreen. Keeping the users’ review in mind, the screen — as they say — provides a totally out of the world experience.

The camera sports a strength of 5 Megapixel, enough to take clear pictures and save them on the internal memory. We have a standard 3.5mm headphone jack and a plenty of social networking tools are added along the lines. Fire up the camera app to capture photos and you will notice the auto focus feature — along with the ability to geo-tag the captured images. That’s a nifty little feature that most of the smart phones lack these days.

You can add the widgets to enhance your phone’s functionality. Likewise, you can remove them without much hassle — the ability to use widgets and customize it is what brings in limitless possibilities. Despite the phone being under rated, it still stands out of the crowd, thanks to the rave video reviews and media coverage.

The screen is build of scratch resistant glass material, so there is no need to bother buying a cleaning kit to wipe off the scratches. Last but not the least, the cute screen and the snappy functionality will lift your hopes high. The phone is a rare minimalistic Android handsets in the market that you should try it out.

With all this said, the Xperia X10 smart phone looks simple and robust, yet remains to be versatile. This smart phone is available at the price tag of around $300 — needless to say, it is worth every penny!

HTC TOUCH HD2

Yes, another HTC branded phone, but this one comes with a stunning display screen. The phone, HTC Touch HD2, is among the very few glorious gadget made in 2010 that rings the bell for its well-known touch technology Windows feature. It is not just the build that attracts the sales, the lighting fast response navigation with the touch of a finger makes it an ideal mobile choice. This phone has been favored by many and therefore it stays in the list of our top smart phones.

This responsive phone, incorporating the HTC Sense UI, is designed for the consumers to meet some of the core principles: make it mine, stay close, and discover the unexpected.

Apart from being able to automatically locate your location — and change the time — the HTC HD2 sports varies sensors ranging from proximity sensor to G-sensor. Each of these sensors are pretty much capable of leaving the buyers stunned.

When we compare HTC Touch HD2 with rest of the phones, you’ll notice the change in the operating system. Whilst most of the HTC phones like HTC Desire, Desire Z, Desire HD uses Android operating system, HTC HD2 prefers to tack on the Windows Mobile 6.5 version OS. And the phone actually works quite well on the Windows mobile operating system.

And like most of the smart phones, HTC HD2 has social network integration. Twitter users can tweeting, folks can update their Facebook status and enthusiastic photographers can upload images right off their phone — really this couldn’t get easier than this. Not to forget the browsing, it’s responsive and you should know that 4.3 inch screen can cram in any webpage from the internet.

Focusing on the screen resolution of this device, let’s say that similar to HTC Desire, the HTC HD2 sports a 480x800px resolution which is larger than that of iPhone, or most of the smart phones. The display technology is TFT, although an AMOLED screen would have been an ideal choice for the HTC Touch HD2 phone.

This beast also combines with an Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 1GHz processor speed, and RAM of 448MB to lighten up your day and process the tasks faster than before. Of course the internal memory of 512MB is something to think about. However, micro SC cards can be inserted, and the device does come with 8GB SD card. We also have proximity sensors for making life much more versatile.

The HTC Touch HD2 camera is of 5 Megapixel, enough to produce quality images and snapshots. These images can be directly uploaded onto the web, or you can save them right away. And for those of you wondering, yes, there is no physical button to click for taking snapshots. It’s all there right in the screen. Just look over the internet and you’ll notice the quality of recording is quite good through the HD2 camera, despite using the video graphics array at 30 frames per second.

Another notable form factor is the material of this smart phone. HTC Touch HD2 screen is made out of scratch resistant glass. So, you know, it’s an awesome phone.

With HTC Touch HD2, you can easily dig up account information and read your e-mails, check your browser and launch other application. And the best part is the responsiveness which never negotiates. So, this bulky smart phone offering heap of features has to be the best possible device from HTC. Every feature of the phone deserves an equal credit for creating a phone that not only looks good, and works as intended. Kudos to HTC for offering this device at an approximate price tag of $600.

HTC Desire HD

HTC Desire HD is the ultimate smartphone beast that has been grabbing a lot of eyeballs since its launch. The phone, also commonly known as the iPhone killer (no kidding!), has a massive cinematic screen that pushes the mobile industry to a whole new territory of technology.

It’s not just the phone’s 4.3 inch screen that is raising the eyebrows of the consumers, but the design of HTC Desire HD is said to be rocking as well. The design, if you have used the phone, is much more polished with a solid hardware integration. And, not to forget, we have Android operation system in use. The Android version is 2.2 (Froyo) which is Google’s free operating system that is available for everyone.

The efforts put into the HTC Desire HD smart phone by the team has been definitely well thought-out than the rest of the Android phones. So, let’s cut to the chase and quickly look at the offerings of the HTC Desire HD.

First off, the resolution of the Desire HD screen is 480 x 800 pixels — which is, if you didn’t knew yet, the best resolution built for a smart phone. Also we have the HTC’s own HTC Sense UI along with the operating system. With HTC Sense, it all makes ‘sense’ why this phone has been quite popular from the past couple of months.

On the outside, the HTC Desire HD is wrapped with a solid aluminum case that has a camera on the back, this camera is of 8 Megapixel strength — quite good to take quality pictures, save or upload them on the internet on-the-go. You should by now know that most of the phones doesn’t even sport a decent camera. Even if they do, they can hardly match up against the HTC Desire HD, that’s for sure!

Because of the HTC Sense UI, the phone displays stylish interface with HTC’s widgets such as calendar widgets (sporting multiple calendar), weather app, address book and the likes. The phone also comes with social-network integration for those of you who are obsessed with Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Inevitably, HTC Desire HD has the smoothest, perhaps the best, scrolling feature that could be made available for a phone. Not to forget the swiping, and typing on the keyboard which gets fairly easier once you are used to it, thanks to the cinematic display screen.

Network connection on the HTC Desire HD includes 3G, Wi-Fi, Edge and GPS. The video format supported is slightly a bigger list, so we will confine ourselves by saying that HTC Desire HD supports most of the standard video formats. However, note that the recorded videos through the HTC Desire HD can be saved only in .3GP extension. The battery, needless to say, has an excellent standby time and talk time as well.

Coming to the pricing of the HTC Desire HD, it may not be affordable for most of the folks. It’s not cheaper, but if you are considering to bank on it then go ahead — this device will be the best smartphone you have ever owned.

Samsung Epic 4G Review

Now, as a consumer, we are not quite accustomed to the 3G networks yet, and the functionalities it provides in terms of connectivity and the seamless integration is something to consider in today’s modern world. However, as technology wings forward, we have upgraded from 3G to the 4G technology.

The 4G technology, which is of course better than 3G, offers immense possibilities — some of which are not going to be exploited in the next few months at the least and this is particularly because major network providers are still scrambling up their 3G networks. HTC was the first to launch a 4G phone with their HTC Evo 4G, but now Samsung is getting up to them with the Samsung Epic 4G.

With a 4.0 inch super AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen that can easily bring up 16 million colors at WVGA resolution, the Samsung Epic 4G screen shadows down traditional LCDs with a wider viewing angle and better contrast ratio — enabling users to use it even under direct sunlight without any hassle.

The 1GHz Hummingbird Cortex A8 processor packs quite a punch and with a front-facing 5.0 megapixel camera flaunting a LED flash, snapping pictures are a real treat with this smart phone. If the clean virtual keyboard is not up to your fancies, then slide out the full QWERTY keypad hidden underneath and type on it. You will of course clearly appreciate the spacious keys which are nothing short of awesomeness.

Of the Galaxy S series of phones from Samsung, this is the bulkiest, but the inherent features strike out all the cons. The phone also features a 3.5 mm audio jack and a micro USB port for easy connectivity. So, we could definitely say that Epic 4G phone is nothing short of a multimedia convergence device.

And the OS? Epic 4G is powered by Android 2.1 and the popular Samsung’s UI called the TouchWiz interface. Using this phone is a real breeze, thanks to the OS. The TouchWiz interface is of version 3.0 with added functionality and offers a more polished look to the whole device.

If all these features fail to impress you (I don’t see how!), then you need to know that the accelerometer is the fastest of all — with a response time of less than a second. The flip of the screen orientation is detected fast and the screen shifts accordingly; all this in under a second. A proximity sensor has been used to turn of the phones screen when the phone is brought near the ear as in during a call.

Connectivity just sky-rocketed with the ability of this device to act as a Wi-Fi hot-spot for up to 5 devices, and with this you know that the Wi-Fi connectivity need not be talked about much.

If you were planning to get a 4G phone and are not particularly looking on the issues of the size of this phone, which you shouldn’t because most of the 3G and 4G phones are bulkier than our older “geeky” phones, then this is one phone that you should really consider.

Lumia 800

Nokia Struggles On with the Lumia 800

Nokia phones, formerly the most popular in the world, are trailing behind their rivals, both in terms of their capabilities and their sales. Its brand-new Lumia 800 smartphone, intended to make its name once more, is reportedly trailing behind the iPhone 4S in sales, with only around 500,000 to 1 million units expected to sell by the end of this year. Its previous top-of-the-line smartphone, last year’s N8, sold almost 4 million handsets during the last quarter of 2010.

Nokia previously forecast that it would sell 2 million Lumias this quarter, still a big drop from the N8, but has been forced to revise its estimate further downwards. Could it be that the company’s decision to finally drop its Symbian OS, in favour of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 OS, was a huge mistake? It certainly seems to have bet on the wrong horse, and has been steadily losing ground in the market to both Apple and Android phones this year. Its admission that the Lumia 800 would be less successful than anticipated led to an 8.8% drop in its share price.

The firm also announced that they would be cutting 17,000 jobs worldwide, as part of “restructuring”. As yet, there’s no word as to how many jobs will be lost in the UK, but overall it’s almost a quarter of Nokia’s global workforce. They also intend to save 1 billion euro in operating costs per year, but say that “Despite the need to restructure parts of our company, our commitment to research and development remains unchanged, with investment in mobile broadband expected to increase over the coming years.”

Nokia claim to still be confident about the Lumia, even with the revised sales estimate, saying, “Lumia 800 sales in the UK are off to an excellent start. Based on earliest data the sales start of the Lumia 800 is the best ever first week of Nokia smartphone sales in the U.K. in recent history. By our measures, we have gained significant smartphone sell-out share in the channels in which we are operating in the UK.” Unfortunately, most of those claims are meaningless, with a little analysis – the Lumia sales don’t compare well at all with the previous Nokia flagship smartphone, as discussed above. Unless “recent history” ignores the N8 entirely, Nokia is still doing quite badly. They may have confidence that the Lumia 800 will eventually sell well for them, but they haven’t said so, and industry analysts are certainly not confident of that. The Lumia simply doesn’t have enough to distinguish it from other smartphones, other than the Nokia name; the Windows name just doesn’t appear to sell phones, at least not in the way that “iPhone” or “Android” does.

In a rare piece of good news for Nokia, their signature Drive satnav software, currently a Lumia exclusive, at least in its most impressive form, will be usable completely offline by Lumia handset owners. This will cut down on data charges, as well as ensuring that Lumia fans who roam far off the beaten track will still be able to use Drive, even if they have no phone signal.

The best casino games on your phone

The best thing about playing casino games is the little taste of glamour they offer. Even if you’re just playing on the sofa, clad in your finest PJs, there’s something about the ritual of the games and the soothing clicks of the cards being shuffled that can make you come over all James Bond. Even if you lose, there’s a certain feeling of excitement that’s hard to replicate in any other games.

And of course, with the fabulous technology we have today, we’re able to play hi-tech games whenever we feel like it. Most people’s phones are capable of playing pretty sophisticated games, and as a result the market in this area has flourished. So, if you want to play a bit of casino at home (or on the bus, in a waiting room, etc.), there’s no longer anything stopping you.

The game blackjack has always been one of the most popular casino options out there, and it lends itself perfectly to the mobile platform. It’s so easy and quick to play (try and make your cards add up to 21, that’s it!), it’s a good one for when you’re waiting for someone, or are in a situation where you’ll need to wrap the game up quickly. When it’s time to put it away, there’s no frustrating ‘waiting for a break in the game’ or trying to pause and save it. Simply click off and leave. As a result, blackjack works well for mobile gaming, when a lot of people are just looking for something simple to keep them occupied.

Roulette is a similarly easy-to-finish game, but the element of chance involved can make it feel slightly more exciting than blackjack. With this unpredictability, you never know how your roulette game will finish, which makes it feel very different to the other games across the market – ones that require more consideration and thought. And as a one-person game, it’s easy to play when you’re alone or are just looking to kill time, as it doesn’t require any other participants.

Poker offers plenty of choice for its users, which is good if you’re an indecisive sort of person. Choose from playing with different numbers of cards, different styles of game and different rules, customising the game to suit your preferences. The best thing about poker is that it requires a little bit of thought and strategy, making it great for those who want something a little bit challenging. Although playing it on your mobile doesn’t really give you a chance to break out your best poker face (unless you really want to), it’s still a fun way to get some practice with pretty complex game.

Baccarat is possibly the most glamorous option (they love it in Monaco, dah-ling), and for this reason it’s a good choice for when you want to feel particularly swanky. It’s a multifaceted game, making it all the more of an enticing challenge. The rules are similar to blackjack, but more cards are used and each card value is slightly different. The mental arithmetic involved can get pretty complicated, but this is great for when you want to totally switch off from the outside world.

When you are playing games on your phone, casino games are an easy, very accessible option, with the added excitement of a possible cash prize. However, it’s important to remember that a win in a casino game is by no means guaranteed, and since such activities are simply games of chance you can just as easily lose. For that reason, don’t be that bore that takes it too seriously, and whatever you do don’t stake life savings, your house or your grandmother’s kidneys on the next big game.
