The T-Mobile G2 has seemingly been announced and released just a few months ago, and now T-Mobile is ready to cash in on the name and get another G2 – but this time, it’s from LG. In a weird twist that must’ve left HTC heartbroken
, T-Mobile will be offering the new LG Optimus 2X (which is the first phone to run a dual core Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip) as the T-Mobile G2X.
Now, if you’re not a HTC fan or don’t really care about the manufacturer of your new smartphone, you’ll definitely like the new G2X. It certainly has everything one might need to be super productive and entertained on the move.
A typical slab smartphone with very powerful hardware
The exterior of the Optimus 2X/G2X looks like just about any other slab smartphone on the market – it is relatively thin with rounded edges and four Android navigation touch buttons on the front below the screen. There’s definitely nothing special about it, but it looks great, feels solid and works just fine. The display is a very nice 4 inch WVGA (800×480 pixels) LCD unit that should be more than enough for all the tasks you can throw at it. Of course, it is covered with an edge-to-edge scratch resistant glass for protection.
The internal hardware was the main focus for the Optimus 2X, and that is definitely the case with the G2X, as well. The phone features NVidia’s new Tegra 2 System-on-a-Chip, with two processor cores running at 1 GHz each and a powerful GeForce mobile graphics adapter that is 4 times faster than the Adreno used in the first generation 1 GHz Snapdragon – the platform that was used extensively in smartphones and tablets alike throughout 2010.
Sure enough, the device has enough RAM to support the powerful processor – 768 MB of fast DDR2 RAM, and there will be 8 GB of onboard memory, with the ability to add up to 32 GB more using a micro SD card – that should be plenty for anyone, unless of course, you’re storing HD videos on your phone
.
1080p video recording and all the features you’ll ever need
Speaking of HD: the Tegra 2 has both a 1080p HD decoder and encoder onboard, which means that not only you’re able to watch Full HD videos and movies on your phone without taxing the processor (only the GPU), but you can also shoot videos in 1080p resolution using the 8 megapixels camera on the back – an impressive feat that only LG seems to offer at the moment – you can find demo videos on Youtube, and they certainly look good. There’s also a smaller 1.3 megapixels camera on the front for video calls, if you fancy them.
Other hardware specs are also up to date: the T-Mobile G2X has almost everything you can think of, including support for HSPA+ networks, HDMI out and dual display support (meaning you can output video while working on the touch screen!), Wifi N, Bluetooth 3.0, all the standard sensors and more. You certainly won’t miss anything on this smartphone!
Vanilla Android completes the G2X – a truly international smartphone
The T-Mobile G2X will come with a default Android installation, meaning no buggy skin from LG (which used to take a lot of memory and crash often on the demo Optimus 2X), just vanilla Android, customizable to your needs. The phone will ship with Android 2.2, and there will be an upgrade to 2.3 in the future.
A concern among T-Mobile users is the almost confirmed buyout of the company by AT&T – if that happens, older T-Mobile phones (even the G2) will not work on the AT&T’s 3G network, being limited to only EDGE. That will not be a problem with the G2X – this device supports practically all major 3G and 4G frequencies, including 850, 900, 1800, 1900 AND 2100 – a little known feature that makes this phone a truly international smartphone – business users can also benefit from this! All in all, the T-Mobile G2X will be worth getting, especially if it’s priced right.
